This weekend I headed into the desert to celebrate my birthday with friends. We left a little earlier than my friends and stopped by the salton sea. This is one of my favorite places to take photos. I have been coming here since I was a kid. For those of you who dont know, the salton sea used to be a thriving beach resort back in the 50s. The water became polluted from nearby agricultural runoff and now has an insanely high salt content. The fish can't live in the water when temperatures rise because the oxygen levels decrease and there are mass deaths. During the summer you can see thousands upon thousands of dead rotting tilapia on the shore. Luckily for us there were no fish. The town is mostly abandoned with the exception of a few dozen retired townspeople and a handful of low income families. So almost all of the houses have been left in the condition that they were in back in the 50s. You can see smashed tv sets, old carpet, dilapidated couches all covered in trash. Its fun to explore. I have seen a few good documentaries on the salton sea, and there are a few people who believe one day it will return to its glory days. A lot of people even eat the fish, which I wouldn't recommend... Anyhow, I had a lot of fun this weekend, and took a lot of photos, here is the first set!
This was only part one of the photos from my trip. Ill be posting the rest later this week. We stayed in an amazing dome house in Joshua Tree which was the best place I have ever stayed hands down. I know lots of you will want to go after seeing all the photos!
