I have been wanting to share this with you guys for years. I came up with this for one of my best friends Roberto. Hey Roberto! He drinks mate every day, and I thought this would be an amazing christmas gift. I am making it again for him this year. (If you are reading this sorry I spoiled the surprise of part of your gift)
This was more of an experiment, and never thought it would taste all that great, but it is actually pretty amazing! This would make a great last minute gift for any mate lover! It couldn't be any simpler to make, and it can be shared with friends!
If you have never had mate before, it is a great alternative to coffee. It is a caffeinated tea with tons of antioxidants. It comes from South America where it is traditionally consumed out of a gourd with a metal straw. It has a very herbaceous flavor and is slightly bitter. If you are new to mate, the bagged version is slightly more palatable since I think it is an acquired taste. Once you drink it you will discover it to be much better than coffee though and you will grow to love the taste!
any size glass jar ( I used a half pint jar)
yerba mate tea
heat seal-able tea bags
I buy my yerba mate in its loose leaf form in big kilo bags. If you are an avid mate drinker you probably do to. If this is the case, you need to get your hands on some heat seal-able tea bags. I used 2 tbsp for half a pint of vodka. The bigger your jar, the more you will add. If you are new to mate, you should probably just get the kind that is already bagged. Add 1 tea bag for every 1 tbsp of loose tea. Fill the jar with vodka to the top and seal with the lid.
Let the mate infuse for 2 weeks before drinking. Shake it up a few times a day, and leave it in a cool somewhat dimly lit place. If you want add some striped bakers twine, add a label and ta-da you are done! The mate infused vodka will turn a slightly green color and looks beautiful in a glass. Let me know if you decide to try this or what drinks you make with it!
